“Rising above extreme adversity was the common response from those with whom I served in North Vietnamese prisoner-of-war camps. Dave Carey, a truly motivational individual, describes in heartbreaking detail his experience and, much more importantly, the lessons he learned from that experience and has applied in his life. His is a story of courage and honor and I recommend it to anyone who seeks to find the positive that can come from the worst of times.”
- Senator John McCain

Dave Carey is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. During the Vietnam War, after his plane was shot down, he was interred as a POW in Hanoi for five and a half years. His military honors include the Legion of Merit, five Bronze Stars, two Meritorious Service Medals, the Purple Heart, eight air Medals, and the Navy Commendation Medal. He resumed his career as a Naval officer after returning from Vietnam. During that time he held three positions as commanding officer, including service as Director of the Navy’s Leadership and Management program. He retired with the rank of captain.
